Centre's Location And Other Facts

Cherokee County was established by the Alabama legislature on January 9, 1836 and Cedar Bluff was recognized as the county seat until 1844 when the Legislature authorized it's move to Centre.

Centre is located in the Coosa river basin almost midway between two cities known for their industrial production, Rome, Georgia and Gadsden, Alabama. It is one of several towns which have benefited from the construction of Alabama Power's Weiss Lake hydro-electric dam in 1961.

The backwaters from Weiss dam covers 30,200 acres or approximately 5273 sq miles. It is fed by the Coosa, the Chatooga and Little rivers and is known as the "Crappie Capital of the World". It has some 450 miles of shoreline with a full-pool height of 564 feet above sea level. For full fishing details check This Site.
