City of Centre, Alabama Business Guide |
Please read our "about" page for Terms & Advertisement Rates |
It is surrounded by other small towns of the county (Click Here for expandable map) which are within 5 to 12 miles distance, and numerous businesses dot the highways between them making it quite a large area eventhough loosely laid out. These towns, Cedar Bluff, Gaylesville, Leesburg and Sandrock, are included in this business guide for Centre. The combined population was 6,160 in 2000. This figure indicates the total within those towns limits. Add those outside the towns limits and include those within the shopping area and you would no doubt double that figure, or more.
These 5 towns are interspersed around the perimeter of Lake Weiss which is known as the "Crappie Capital of the World" (Click Here for evidence).
The settlement of Centre became the county seat of Cherokee county in 1844 after having been originally settled by a family from England who gave it the English spelling "Centre", and although the U.S. Post Office originally used the word "Center", residents petitioned the Post Office to retain the spelling given by the English family, which was granted.
Please tour this site thoroughly and before you know it, you'll be "home-folks" and begin craving to catch Crappie! You will find that Lake Weiss has a little bit of everything to offer in water sports, leisure living, and serene beauty. You will also find Centre and the surrounding area to be populated with the kind of people you like. Solid, down to earth, honest and we love to fish.
