City of Gadsden Alabama
Business Guide

Gadsden's Noccalula Falls atop Lookout Mountain was originally known as Black Creek Falls. Legend has it that it was renamed Noccalula Falls by an Indian princess' father after she jumped to her death there. She was being forced to marry a prominent Indian chief rather than her true love.

It is a beautiful, although tragic story which may or may not be true. You may read the legendary account Here

GADSDEN'S GUIDE TO

Retail Stores, Banks, Dining, Insurance, Schools, Churches, Realtors and more.

The spot now known as Gadsden was first settled by a mixed white/Indian man named John Riley around 1825. He built near two springs and the place was called Double Springs. About 15 years later a couple named Gabriel and Asenath Hughes acquired the house and also bought much of the land which is now within the city proper. The name Gadsden was adopted around 1845 in honor of Col. James Gadsden. It was incorporated in 1871.
