A brief look at The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)

The 1887 Richmond Declaration of Faith, Click Here covers most of the beliefs of the majority of Quakers. My personal knowledge of this religion is somewhat limited. However, what little I have read concerning them has been that of strict adherence to their beliefs and of a non-violent nature. I heard a joke once that may have helped fashion my outlook towards them. It went like this:

A Quaker farmer who had put in a difficult day on his farm, came home and went to milk his cow. Numerous flies were harassing the cow and as she switched her tail to remove them, she kept mauling the farmer on the side of his head. After several such blows, he just about came to his wit's end, stood up and in a very exasperated voice proclaimed, "I cannot strike thee, nor can I curse thee, but I can twist thy confounded tail."

MUSINGS OF JOEL

What a wonderful privilege it is to be able to pray to God. Straight to him. Did you know that there are some Christians(?) who don't pray. Or at best, only a short memorized prayer for saying when called upon to lead a public prayer.

I recall when I was a small boy and we attended services at a small rural congregation with only 4 or 5 adult men in attendance, when one would be called on to lead a prayer. Sometimes this one would say, "I'm going to ask brother John to lead the prayer". and brother John would do the same thing to another brother, who would pass it to still another. And sometimes when they ran out of brethren, the last one would say, "No, you go ahead". Then that one would be about stuck with it and would mumble a few words too softly to be understood.

Although somewhat amusing, it is really very pathetic. I suspect (and hope) that most of that was brought on because many of them were not well educated and I feel they were embarrassed and self conscious of their inability to speak well. Until this day, I find it more difficult to word a public prayer than a private one. I'm not as concerned that God will misunderstand my stammering and poor grammer as I am that those surrounding me will. But whatever the occasion, we ought to always pray without ceasing and not worry about anyone other the one we are addressing.

The Transfiguration

Jesus' transfiguration is recorded in Matthew 17: 1-8 and Mark 9: 2-10. The transfiguration of Jesus is one of the recorded events in Jesus' life which manifestly declares Jesus' singular greatness.

The facts of the transfiguration. Jesus took Peter, James, and John up into a high mountain (Matt. 17: 1). Jesus' transfiguration (change) is described as, "…his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light" (vs. 2). Mark adds that the shine of Jesus' clothing was unequaled (9: 3). Moses and Elias appeared, talking with Jesus (Matt. 17: 3). Peter, when seeing all that took place, wanted to make on the sight three tabernacles or places of worship. "One for thee (Jesus, dm), and one for Moses, and one for Elias," Peter explained (vs. 4). At this point, a voice was heard out of the cloud which had overshadowed them. The voice exclaimed, "…This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him" (Matt. 17: 5).

Lessons gleaned from the transfiguration. One lesson which stands out is man's thinking and God's thinking are often very different (cf. Isa. 55: 8, 9). Peter's suggestion to build three tabernacles was not good (Matt. 17: 4, 5). Peter, as a man, was wrong on numerous occasions. The Papacy and infallibility of Peter is patently a false doctrine. Another obvious lesson is the majesty and grandeur of Jesus. Two men could not have been found who were more spiritually representative than Moses the great law giver and Elias, the head of the prophets. Notwithstanding, the voice declared regarding Jesus, "…hear ye him." Paul wrote of Jesus that Christians are in Jesus' kingdom, Jesus is the firstborn of every creature, and he is the Creator (Col. 1: 13, 15, 16). Also, Jesus is the head of the church, and has all authority in heaven and earth (Col. 1: 18, Matt. 28: 18). Moreover, we are complete in Jesus (Col. 2: 10)

Beloved, it behooves us today to hear Jesus and Jesus only (2 Jn. 9-11). There is salvation in no other name (Acts 4: 12). Men and their creeds dull in comparison to Jesus and his splendor!

SOUTHEASTERN LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR CHRIST

The future of the church rests on our ability to train effective leaders. There will always be a need for leaders to rise to the occasion as servants, Bible class teachers, ministers, deacons, and elders. Believing that such training should begin at an early age, Leadership Training for Christ provides an opportunity for youngsters, beginning in the third grade, to recognize and develop leadership skills.

Training is Biblical, practical, and in-depth. Leadership Training for Christ provides local congregations an opportunity to work with children and teens on a year-round basis. The second annual SELTC convention is being planned for March 29-31 in Mobile, AL. For more information please see our website Click Here or call 205-988-5808.
