GOD'S AMAZING PROVIDENCE

One of man's most difficult and challenging questions is that of trying to understand and/or recognize the providential workings of God. If God personally intervenes in earthly activities, does that interfere with man's free moral agency? Or, if He does not influence the minds of men in a supernatural manner, how does He accomplish His purpose?

I, for one, do not profess to understand it. I firmly believe that miracles have ceased for this period of time. I also firmly believe that many things come to pass because God is steering the course. I believe that I have been witness to tremendous changes here on earth during my own lifetime that have been accomplished by the will of God. A few (some of which I did not witness personally) are the discovery and settlement of America, especially by many who were seeking freedom of religion. The establishment of a free nation. The restoration of the Lord's church. The almost total collapse of atheistic Communism. The strong deterioration, weakening, and humiliation brought upon the Roman Catholic church. And we might even add the invention and implementation of the computer and internet. With all it's undesirable traffic and other such problems, it is the most extensive and penetrating media for spreading God's word that can be imagined! I think we will be amiss if we do not grasp this opportunity!!

Be sure to read this article by Allan Turner. It is a good one that gives some insight on the chief aspects of God's providence. Also be sure to read Louis Rushmore's article reprinted below.

Florida's Ban on Homosexual Adoption Likely to Stand
By Fred Jackson, July 2, 2002

(AgapePress) - It appears Rosie O'Donnell may be in for an uphill battle in her campaign to legalize homosexual adoption in Florida.

O'Donnell has gained a lot of media attention in recent weeks. She went public with her declaration of being a lesbian and announced the launching of a campaign to force Florida to accept homosexual adoption. But a poll done in the last several days indicates that is not what most Floridians want.

According to The Orlando Sentinel, one of the papers which commissioned the poll, 40% of those surveyed said they would be less likely to vote for a gubernatorial candidate who advocated allowing homosexual "couples" to adopt. Only 15% said they would favor a politician who supported such a measure.

Jim Kane is with Florida Voter, the company that did the poll. He says based on these results, this issue is "dead on arrival" in Tallahassee.

Florida is the only state in the country with a law banning homosexual adoption. It was passed in 1977 in the midst of singer Anita Bryant's campaign against special rights for homosexuals.

The Providence Of God
By Louis Rushmore

Like God himself (Genesis 1:1), providence is not precisely defined in the Bible. Neither does the word providence appear in the Bible with reference to God. However, God’s providence is amply taught throughout the Bible.

There are two types of providence. There is general providence, under which all of humanity shares physical blessings irrespective of individual relationships with God. ". . . your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matthew 5:45).

There is also special providence, under which faithful children of God are the direct recipients of physical or spiritual blessings.

"And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt" (Gen. 45:4-8).
In the strictest sense, God’s providence does not employ miracles today. During miraculous times God sometimes used miracles to aid his providence. Miracles, though, have ended, as every mature, faithful child of God will attest (1 Corinthians 13:8-13; Ephesians 4:11-14). Yet, God does use divine power (i.e., power that you and I do not have) to affect natural law to execute his providence.

What, then, is the difference between miracles which have ceased and divine power which God uses to make providence work? Miracles, among other things, were always visible demonstrations of supernatural power. Divine power that God uses in his providence is not discernible to human beings (i.e., though the result of God’s providence may be visible, how God causes it to occur cannot be known). Therefore, God’s providence appears mysterious to us. God simply does not tell us some things about his providence (and other matters, Deuteronomy 29:29). "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!" (Romans 11:33).

The purpose of God’s providence is the ultimate redemption of humanity. Therefore, suffering (e.g., Joseph, Job; Acts 8:1-4) or even death (e.g., "The blood of martyrs is the seed of the kingdom"; the death of Christ; Revelation 2:10) rather than earthly happiness may better serve the purpose of the providence of God.

How does God’s providence affect humanity? (1) The created world is sustained by divine, providential power--the same power by which it was created (Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:1-3; John 1:1-3). (2) Prayers are effective through providence. "Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit" (James 5:17-18). (3) Christians are to be worry-free because of providence (Matthew 6:24-34). (4) God, through his providence, appoints rulers (e.g., Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel 4:17-34), raises up or pulls down nations (e.g., Jeremiah 18:7-10), arranges circumstantial events of people and Christians (i.e., brings parties together who will predictably or through foreknowledge react a certain way, e.g., Pharaoh’s hardened heart). God, though, does not interfere with free moral agency.

How does humanity affect the providence of God? (1) God works through people who voluntarily conform to the purpose or will of God (e.g., taking the Gospel to the world, Mark 16:15-16). (2) God will use other persons to achieve his will if one through his own free moral agency does not do the will of God (e.g., Esther 4:15).

Providence as it pertains to Christians is circumstantial. Only faithful children of God directly benefit from the goal of God’s providence (Romans 8:28); the Egyptians became the indirect beneficiaries of the unfolding of God’s providence to save Joseph’s family. Otherwise, though the ungodly may appear to prosper in this life, they will not persevere in eternity (e.g., Luke 16:19-31; however, not all rich people in this life are evil--Job, Abraham).

God uses imperfect humanity to further his providence. He uses imperfect people who are generally righteous (e.g., Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Peter, you and me). Additionally, God uses people to accomplish his providential goals who may be generally unrighteous (e.g., rulers, nations, etc.).

A key element of providence is that through it God provides. The truth-seeker will find the truth (John 7:17). Providence provides for the fulfillment of God’s ultimate goal for humanity (Philippians 1:12). "But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel."

God, through providence, is attentive to the needs of his people. God does not slumber (Psalm 121:3). God sees and knows.

"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows" (Matthew 10:28-31).
God hears the prayers of his faithful children; "For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil" (1 Peter 3:12). God will never leave us (Hebrews 13:5-6). God is our defender; "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us" (Romans 8:31).

The first verse about God’s providence to which we usually turn is Romans 8:28. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." The "good" here corresponds to God’s ultimate purpose for humanity. Summarized, the phrase "all things work" equals the law of operation; "all things work together" equals the law of cooperation. The phrase "all things work together for good" signifies the law of compensation; "all things work together for good to them that love the Lord" is the law of limitation.

The Bible clearly teaches the certainty of God’s providence. However, there is some uncertainty exactly how it works. We can assuredly say, though, that God’s providence works through elders, deacons, preachers, teachers, parents, Christians and the local church (1 Corinthians 3:5-10).

"Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon."
Finally, we can have confidence that the minimal benefit of providence is the ability to remain faithful (Revelation 2:10; 1 Corinthians 10:13). Through providence, nothing and no one can separate us from God unless we allow it (Romans 8:35-39).

MUSINGS OF JOEL

If you are not as old as I am, and most folks aren't, you probably do not recall the old time farming, with horses and mules, or even oxen, and doing much of the row cultivation and harvesting strictly by hand.

It was certainly a rough and tiresome method of farming here in the rural South, especially in our immediate area of hills and mountains, very little level land with good sandy soil, but mostly hard red clay with many, many rocks on slopes and hillsides. We had to work from just after daylight until sundown, with a short break for lunch. We always used mules, they were more gentle and steady than the fiery horses or the creeping pace of the oxen. All these animals were pitiable. They worked the hours that we did, but they pulled the plow through that red clay while we only wrestled to steer it and keep it in the ground.

But God blessed most of us with a good life of health, the best foods and fruits, cool, unpolluted water, fresh milk and eggs. And it taught us that our livelihood was not a handout. One of our neighbors, who was not a Christian in his earlier years, when approached by my father, and/or other Christians in an effort to get him to come to church made the remark, "I do not believe a man can live a Christian life and farm the land that I've got!" Fortunately, he later did become a Christian.

And as years past, came the advent of farm tractors and other machinery that took some of the backache out of raising crops, plus many of us left the farm. I don't think I have ever been as happy though as when we were going through those difficult years. No air conditioning, no refrigerators, no televisions, very few cars (my father had a model T Ford until 1937.), outdoor toilets, kerosene lamps for light at night, and on and on. Those were modern times, consider life during Jesus' time.

THE BABY AND THE WASH
By T. Pierce Brown

Some have coined such expressions as, "Throw the baby out with the wash," "Lean over backwards to stand up straight," and various other ones to describe what is conceived as an over reaction to a situation or philosophy. Perhaps in the church those who practice that phenomenon may be called "ultra-conservative." At any rate, although labels such as "liberal" and "conservative" may be dangerous, deceitful and divisive, there is little doubt that most of us use various labels to identify things and persons in some fashion. Without trying to attach an opprobrious label to anyone, I think it might be helpful to suggest one or more areas where it seems that some brethren have done disservice to "the baby," and perhaps not even eliminated the dirty wash.

Since there has arisen in the church various aspects of the "Pentecostal movement," such as tongue speaking, direct operation of the Holy Spirit in conversion, there are those who have taken the position that if God does anything in answer to prayer, this would be a direct operation of the Holy Spirit and the idea must be condemned as false doctrine. Some attempt to modify that idea by saying, "God may providentially do some things," but they seem unable to explain exactly what they mean by that.

There should be a clear distinction between a miracle that was apparent to all who saw it that it was a miracle, and God acting directly on a situation and causing something to happen that would not otherwise have happened. For example, when I pray for a sick person, I see nothing strange or wrong with praying that God heal the sick person. If God does it, I have no way of knowing that He did, so it is not a miracle in the Bible sense. However, it does not solve the problem to pray that God will bless the doctor, the nurse, the medicine, and all means that are used and still deny that God does anything. It is no more a miracle for God to heal the sick person than it is to bless the doctor's hands that they may do something that they would not have done otherwise.

When God "providentially" got Moses' mother to put him in the ark and got Pharaoh's daughter to come down to the river at the same time Moses drifted to the spot, He was acting, just as surely as He was acting when He turned the river into blood. However, the first was not a miracle as the second was, for no one could tell that God had anything to do with the first situation. How He got Moses down there at the right moment without anyone seeing His hand in it, or without overruling the will of anyone, we do not know. This is why we have used the term, "providence." However, by the use of that term, we do not have to deny that God is still active in the affairs of men. To do so would, in terms of this article, be throwing the baby out with the wash.

There is another area where it is possible that some of us are trying to throw the baby out with the wash. We have a group in the church who see nothing wrong with accepting as a Christian brother anyone who claims to accept Jesus as Lord. It matters not that they have neither understood nor obeyed the gospel. This ungodly, unscriptural practice has led some brethren to so react as to stigmatize and ostracize any who would say a good word about some denominational preacher or practice, or even be courteous to their members. To them, the expression, "Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them" means that you sin even if you play golf with a denominational preacher. If you do not call a specific denomination by name when you point out some false doctrine, you are presumed to be a liberal, compromising the truth.

The baby still needs to be washed, and the dirt eradicated. We just need to be careful that we do not do more harm than good by the way we respond to situations. Jesus was teaching approximately the same thing when he gave the parable of the tares and the wheat. He did not mean that we are to disregard the tares and pretend that they are not there, or that they are as good as the wheat. He did include the idea that we are to be careful that we do not root out or trample down the wheat as we get rid of the tares. We are not to get rid of them in the sense that the Roman church got rid of heretics -- by burning them at stake, or otherwise killing or persecuting them. We are to have no fellowship with them as brothers in Christ, but we are not to take vengeance on them or punish them as God alone has the right to do, and will do in the judgment day.

THE CHARCOAL-BURNER AND THE FULLER

A Charcoal-Burner carried on his trade in his own house. One day he met a friend, a Fuller, and entreated him to come and live with him, saying that they should be far better neighbors and that their housekeeping expenses would be lessened. The Fuller replied, "The arrangement is impossible as far as I am concerned, for whatever I should whiten, you would immediately blacken again with your charcoal."
